They can use smaller rackets and play on a smaller court. At this age, it is most important to have fun. So if you are a parent and wondering if your kid is too young for badminton – they can start as early as 5-6 years. Just go for it and see if your kids like it or not.

As children grow older, they can progress to using larger rackets and playing on a full-sized court. One of the most famous badminton players Lin Dan started playing when he was only 5 years old. The current world number one (April 2023) Victor Axelsen started playing when he was 6 years old. This is the case for most world-class players.

A few outliers here are Lee Chong Wei and Carolina Marin. Lee Chong Wei, the legendary singles player from Malaysia, started playing badminton at the age of 11. You might think this is very late compared to the other players but he played basketball before that. So he also had early development of hand-eye coordination. Carolina Marin started playing when she was 8 years old but that was also not her first kind of sport. Before badminton, Carolina Marin had a passion for dancing and did Flamenco.
